Blades & Shadows

Kaziki Halcyon was standing in the observation dome of the Corellian Corvette Eye of Coronet, watching as the world of Corellia spun leisurely in place beyond the transparasteel plate before him. It was a meditative moment, his very being infused with the Force as he he observed it flowing through him. Strands of the future were particularly of interest, especially as he knew what was going to happen in the room he was already in. It gave him solid ground from which to search and that made it all the easier to narrow down which possible futures were the most likely. Once he had the near future pinned down he could look beyond, to find the being he was searching for.

Darth Sivilus was one of the few Lords of the One Sith still unaccounted for, a stain because she was one of the few Sith Lords who had been on Corellia when Krayt had fallen that had also managed to disappear on planet. Disappear without a trace rather than being struck down or driven from the sector entirely. At first the Corellian Jedi had been certain that she'd managed to smuggle herself off world without even the vessel responsible being aware but after nearly a year of searching for the trail that would confirm it they'd found nothing. She'd remained on world and disappeared. Hidden directly under their noses, somewhere on Corellia, stinking up the joint with her foul existence. Sith didn't retire. Sith didn't find a new career and live a quiet existence for the rest of their days.

The very worse went on rampages of death and destruction but the most dangerous began rebuilding from the ground up, working toward a revenge for being stopped from needlessly hurting others in the first place, for all the sense that made. The doors opened behind him and Kaz drew back his focus to regard the semi-reflection in the clear transparasteel, regarding the arrival of his partner for the upcoming mission. CorSec Intelligence believed they had found a pattern that reflected the presence of an unknown player in the underworld cartels. One look and the Corellian Jedi knew they had a chance to get the drop on Sivilus but they had to move before the Force warned her that her position was compromised. If she caught wind of it she would be gone before they could even get into position. Kaz was the location expert but they'd chosen to call in someone who could conceivably keep pace with Darth Sivilus' non-confrontation style long enough to force her into a confrontation.

That was where one Jedi Aerick Marken had come into play. The nearest stealth expert of any pronounced skill to the area, Knight Marken had been called in for this briefing and a quick run at a quicker Sith.

Aerick was a Knight.

That was something he had to remind himself more and more - not out of surprise, or concern, or anything like that. No, it was simply to remember that his duties might entail something a little more serious thank information gathering and espionage. True, those things were important, especially these days - but his skills had other practical uses. He was fully aware how dangerous one could be when they couldn't be detected... and how tempting it might be to exercise that power for something other than spywork.

He simply needed a reminder, every now and again, that he wasn't just the ear of the order - sometimes he had to be a sword, as well. That thought made the weight of the lightsaber on his hip all the more prominent. He could use it - perhaps he was not the most adept at the dueling that many of the other Knights were masters of, but his element of surprise could often make up for that.

Today, on the outskirts of the Corellian planet, he had been summoned for a briefing that would harness his skills not just as a talented information gatherer, but the other things he'd picked up from his Master. Hunting. Tracking. Recognition of the same patterns he used to weave the Force into a coherent invisibility.

He could See various people on the ship, though his focus was on one specific individual - the one that would be his partner for this mission. His boss' son, no less. However, from everything he'd found out about Kaziki Halcyon, he was not someone who had rested on the laurels of his family name, as some might assume. He was far more capable than people initially gave him credit for. He understood that particular concern better than most - he wasn't exactly the most intimidating of Jedi.

But in the end, intimidating or not, he was still a Knight.

The doors to the briefing room opened before him, and he stepped inside, his intrinsic nature making his footsteps silent, even on the metal deck beneath him. The soft soles were designed to absorb what little sound that could conceivably be made by someone who already walked softly - making for an almost unsettling ability to walk up to people without their knowing.

Or at least, people that weren't Jedi. When he chose to conceal himself, maybe... but that wasn't necessary in this situation.

"Jedi Halcyon - it is a pleasure to meet you." He smiled, easily. "I expect between the two of us this matter should be addressed fairly quickly..." A little bit of an assumption, and maybe just a touch more pride in his work than what was appropriate for a Jedi, but if everything he heard about Kaziki was true, this should be an overall walk in the park.

"Jedi Marken, I find peers in short supply these days. It's more than a pleasure, it's a hope for the future that the younger Knights have found ourselves called on so thoroughly." Kaz turned and shined his brightest smile before realizing there was a good chance that the action was wasted, though the intent no doubt wasn't. Miralukan Jedi were far from unheard of, in the old Order they had, in fact, been quite common due to the fact that all Miralukan were Force Sensitive to one degree or another. Always enough for Far Sight, at any rate. The Emperor Palpatine had agonized over what to do about the lot, so near human but a constant source for potential Jedi.

Kaz nodded, finally deciding that he would act just like he always did and let the sentiment shine through right along with his actions. The actions would keep him from having to think about his reactions so much, make them flow more naturally, and thus not look the awkward youth. "I'm overly familiar with our target. If we can flush her out I am certain we can not just defeat but capture Darth Sivilus outright. She is not a confrontational being, her preference is to hide under the robes of a more powerful individual until she can strike from the shadows with impunity. If we trap her between us, press hard enough, she'll quickly decide it is in her best interests to be a prisoner."

That was why they had presumed her gone in the first place, it was very outside her usual behavior to not put incredible distance between herself and a threat. Kaz, himself, doubted she'd gained the appropriate perspective to alter that habit. It was far more likely she had either been unable to secure a 'safe enough' escape for her liking or she had stumbled across a situation that suited her tastes in so much as providing a strong protector. It was the second option that had Kaz concerned. Who would hide a Sith on Corellia after so many years of abuses? Why? How could anyone see value in a viper after it had already bitten?

Greed, no doubt. "How familiar are you with the situation?" There was a chance that all the other Jedi had received was a summons, the Masters were fond of issuing directives without context.

"I don't have any doubts that it will be so. It's not as though the Order has an excess of manpower." He replied, easily, a careful smile running along his face. It was an unfortunate truth - Jedi were in short supply, even if they weren't under threat of death any longer. One hand lifted, and mussed up his blond hair. The way Kaz spoke wasn't too strict, nor overly familiar - just friendly. Aerick definitely preferred friendly to the alternative. The hand that pushed through his hair crossed over his chest with its opposite, as he listened to Kaziki's breakdown of the situation.

He nodded quietly, at the description of the way she operated. He could see why he'd been called in - it was much the same style as his own. In order to track her, he'd have to follow his own instincts about the situation, along with his ability to hunt and track. The young Jedi tilted his head a little bit, thoughtfully.

"We can only hope so. I know how one with her talents will fight - much like you said. From the shadows, with impunity." If they didn't get the drop on her, they had certainly better hope she didn't get the drop on them. If it came down to it, Aerick was much the same sort of fighter - he didn't need to dance around acrobatically, despite his style of lightsaber study. He just needed to not be seen. Letting out a breath, the young Miralukan shook his head in the negative.

"Only a minor briefing on the way here. I know the person we're looking for, at least insofar as her reputation. Or at least what was given to me. I am certain keeping up with her will be quite the contest." He had never had to truly pit his own skills against someone who acted in the same manner. It would at least be interesting, and if it weren't potentially lethal, it might even be kind of fun.

"Do we have her current location?" He asked, curiously.

"True, but having a Master in here telling me how this is going to go down would be counter productive. Together we can work to see this through without anyone having to have the upper hand. An important consideration later." Kaz knew psychology, it was his focus or else his powers would be little more than parlor tricks suitable for children's parties. He had to know how others thought and in the end it was a knowledge that had an incredible variety of applications. People were people, where ever they were and whatever the end game.

"I've experienced it first hand..." It had been quite an experience, though their lightsabers had only clashed three times. Kaz had been a far less experienced Jedi at the time, not yet a Knight certainly, but her glee at the idea of striking down one of the Jedi who had been hiding under the overlord of Corellia's nose all those years had given her away before the blow. Then she'd fled from the exchange, into the darkness, where Kaz hadn't been willing or able to follow her at that juncture. "She's very good at what she does but has poor discipline with her emotions and suffers from situational awareness zeroing."

Like most sneaky types, she had to focus so much on her immediate situation that she was susceptible to losing track of the bigger picture. Fighter pilots had the same problem, as did some duelists in mass battle. One had to remember to fight the fight, rather than becoming so focused that a battlefield became a series of smaller fights. That was how one got killed by a third party. "We have a general location and no way to know how current it is. Some CorSec analysts identified a pattern and a victim who they believe was killed through the Force. The two together, combined with the general setting of it all, gives a target zone."

Kaz turned and produced a small remote that he pointed at the podium that sat at the center of the room. A map of Coronet appeared, a satellite image of the city zooming in and sliding until it stopped on a northern area. "This is a manufacturing sub-district. Nothing fascinating or particularly heavy, just some minor food processing and industrial repair shops. Lots of hidden nooks and crannies, however. During the Purge my family operated out of the area on and off when we had to make appearances as Jedi, and it was all too easy to disappear into if one took the time to scout it out."

He flipped over to a wire frame image of the area that was populated by blue splotches. "The color indicates the locations of power consumption, and as you can see it's fairly evenly spread out except for... here." Kaz activated a little red laser pointer built into the remote, indicating a couple of buildings that were dark except for some nebulous splotching at the end of the third building. "We don't believe she's living there, the power usage would be more steady or, more likely in her case, hidden under far more abundant usages. We think it's a blind, a space she is using to hunt another or to store bolt supplies."

He hit another button and a timeline appeared over the lone splotch. "The usage is sparse, but not erratic. We have reason to believe she visits this spot sparingly but regularly. Likely to put in or take out whatever it is she keeps there. I'm betting put in, since we captured almost everything she possessed during the push to remove the Sith from the Corellian Sector before the GA or Fel Empire could show up and make claim. She's building resources, possibly even a large supply of credits, against a need or desire to run... or possibly to fund something less tolerable." Kaz turned a self-amused smile on the other Jedi. "Thoughts?"

And a positive outlook to boot? He was definitely starting to warm up to this Knight – while most Jedi were rarely negative, it was difficult to get some of them past ‘completely neutral.’ Neutrality was great in some circumstances, but when it came to missions and the like? Outlook was everything. He kept his arms crossed, as he came closer, as he explained that he had fought her.

It sounded like he knew how to evaluate her style. Hers, like his own, could very easily become tunnel-visioned. He had the advantage of being able to avoid literal tunnel vision, and that was surprisingly helpful in keeping his situational awareness much more broad-spectrum. Physical aspects of someone could certainly change one’s mental response to things.

He glanced in the direction of the map, though it was mostly a gesture for the benefit of the other Jedi.

”Good. If she’s still in that area, I should be able to track her.” He said, gently. He hated that someone had to have been killed – especially by the Force, but that one death would allow them to find her. To make this right. He'd make sure that she wouldn't be able to use these techniques against any innocent bystander ever again. He listened, intently, turning his focus on to the map that sprouted up before them. It didn't look as though it would be too terribly difficult to navigate, but someone would be at a great advantage there, if they had taken the time to scout out those areas. Crucial seconds could be saved.

He let out a breath, as Kaz explained - and he shook his head softly. "Unfortunately, I cannot see the color indications. Normally, I would not bother pointing this out, but it is possible it might be necessary to know in the future." Thankfully, the other Jedi had the presence of mind to point out the area specifically. He rubbed his chin, slowly, thoughtfully, as Kaziki offered what he thought might be happening here - her usage there leaving little to contradict what he said.

His thoughts?

"If she is building a supply - an unknown supply - I'd like to know what it was before we go further. More than that, if it is a vector that she regularly uses, we may be able to simply ambush her - or an intermediary she uses, if that's the case." He remained intrigued. No one who was that paranoid would keep to a specific pattern unless they absolutely had to - he knew that fact from his experiences with his own Master. He'd never call his Master paranoid...

But he might think it awfully loudly some days.

"Anyone in a situation like hers, with the knowledge and skill she clearly has, would only remain in a pattern if it served a purpose higher than survival. Patterns are how you are caught - or how you lay out traps. I doubt she's in a position to set up a trap... but I think whatever it is must be more useful - or more dangerous - than credits." He added, mostly as his own observation. If he was trapped on an Imp planet, he certainly wouldn't follow a pattern of any sort. Not unless he wanted to be found.

"She's been in the area, we're certain of it, and so it's a starting point. We have a pattern, which might very well be a ruse, but all we can do is investigate it and find out. I'm banking that she's grown comfortable, believes that we don't know where she is and that we don't suspect her to still remain on Corellia. We are moving fast on this information before it trickles down the asset ladder, before her assets get a chance to discover it or pass it along. If the Force is with us, she'll be right in the middle of our net when it begins to close." Kaz turned back to face Aerick. "That's where you'll come in. I want you to look at that net as if you were going to try to escape it, figure out what you would do, and that's where we will be waiting for her."

Kaz reached out and indicated the building where the suspected cache was located. "This place isn't a maze but it has several choke points in it and a tunnel access that runs under several buildings. When we move in, I have people who will seal up that tunnel. She might as well fire off flares if she tries getting out that way. CorSec is equipped for Sith hunting, she'll avoid killing them because it'll tip us off to her location, and we'll be waiting when she makes her break for freedom." Kaz blinked at the Miralukan when he admitted he couldn't see colors. "Is that so... I'll adjust accordingly."

"Ambush is the name of the game. If she doesn't turn up we'll definitely carry the investigation into whatever is there. As for remaining in a pattern, the Sith are nothing if not arrogant and quick to compromise themselves. All it takes is time and they throw their cards on the table like amateur sabac players. If you're ready, then, we can hop the shuttle and jump ship when it starts its descent for it's regular refuel and the like."
