The 30th Corellian Sector Charity Challenge was the biggest non-rank Shock Boxing event in the Core Worlds region. Competitors from all over the galaxy were always invited and those who were rarely seen in the rankings were often show cased (especially those known for moving in and out of various combat sports) because of the novelty of their presence against the elite of the sport. So it was that Mir had received his invitation to compete at the end of one of his various tournaments from a scouter who had been dispatched to find exciting fighters who might be interested.

The competition was, of course, of primary interest but the point of the tournament was to publicly solicit massive donations and investments from the rich and powerful throughout the galaxy in return for the good PR said individuals would receive on that well broadcast stage. With his amateur career in both boxing and shock boxing, on top of his position in an a very wealthy noble family, Kaziki Halcyon had received his invitation to attend the event along with an itinerary that asked for an interview and a couple of photo opportunities. That meant Jedi Halcyon was going to be left in the speeder, Lord Halcyon was stepping out for the evening.

Kura Nuhok was a non-entity in this situation... right up until Kaz had turned around and pointed at the bit of the invitation that said +1. Surely a sense of dread followed shortly there after. It wouldn't help her though, for next thing any of them knew both competitors and attendees (with guests) were walking up the red carpet waiving to cameras and occasionally giving interviews. The ring girls waited at the end of the carpet for photo opportunities with those who wished such a thing with the scantily clad ladies of various species.

The real adventure had already happened. Keeping Kura Nuhok, Jedi Knight, off balance long enough to have her fitted and dressed in the latest fashion of gala event wear had been one of Kaz's masterpieces of social misdirection. Making sure to mollify her with the timely announcement of the dress being altered for bodyguard work had been a stroke of pure genius. Making sure the seamstress had seven assistants on hand in the tiny room where it was all done, simply inspired. The fact that it all managed to look drop dead stunning on her... well, that was to be expected of anyone who'd gotten the once over from Kaziki Halcyon's discerning eye with the intention of escorting him.

Keeping things servant and assistant heavy had gotten her all the way into the hover limo where Kaz had proceeded to give a short lecture on the expectations, layouts, security strengths, security weaknesses, and expectations of what they were going to be doing so that she had something to focus on rather than the situation she was unaccustomed to. Until the moment the limo floated to a stop in front of the red carpet and the teeming hordes turned their focus on the as yet to open door, Kaz had it all planned out. From there, however, it was all sink or swim... just the way he had learned she liked it.

Kaz came out of the hover limo with his arms out wide, preceding Kura so that she would be considered a date instead of a bodyguard. Date didn't automatically mean romantic, especially when it came to the young Scion of the House Halcyon, but the gossip rags and entertainment reporters were keen to get a jump on things if they smelled a drop of blood in the water. The flashes and lights of the holorecorders lit up the night and Kaziki Halcyon beamed them back a spectacularly flashing smile as he stood before them in his green and black silk clothing, black leather boots, and long patterned leisure coat.

As always, the sense of money dripped off him but it was understated as was the Halcyon way, or the Horn way when they'd still used that name just a few years beforehand. The material was expensive, the cut fashionable, and the way he wore it said he cared about neither in particular. Kaziki Halcyon had a hard earned (though totally undeserved) reputation for being the life of the party and the least refined of the young nobility on Corellia. Many a day had dawned with pictures of him 'slumming it' on Treasure Ship Row plastered across the holonet news networks. The more he'd partied, the less attention the One Sith had wasted on him. Just the way the Corellian Jedi had planned it.

Kaz turned and held out his hand to Kura to assist her out of the vehicle in the unaccustomed bulk of skirts. "I must have been mistaken, it looks like they are waiting for you." He smiled his most charming smile and waited for her to take the proffered hand. The screams of the 'fans' beyond the rows of reporters said he was full of it but the reporters themselves were practically having heart attacks waiting to see who would step out of the limo behind the young lord.

The interior of the shuttle was quiet as usual, as Mir sat in meditation. It was his own little tradition when preparing for competition. He needed to clear his mind of all distraction to ensure he was prepared for the task at hand. As he finished his meditation, he rose from his seat: going through a full range of stretching exercises. Realizing his transportation would soon arrive, he went about getting dressed. Woven pants in a grayish blue, and knee high boots covered his lower half, while a navy blue tunic covered the rest of him. His standard shoulder cloak was wrapped tightly around his torso.

Hearing a voice come across his comm link, "Mr. Pike. I'm here to take you to the competition." With that, Mir headed towards the hatch. Before making his way down the small ramp, he punched in a quick code, and the hatch slid closed. He then continued on towards the speeder he had hired. With a slight nod, he acknowledged the driver as he climbed in. It was a simple open cockpit speeder: rather unassuming, just like his chosen wardrobe. After ten minutes of riding, the driver spoke again, "Sir, we should arrive soon. The arena is only a couple blocks from here."

"Thank you." Mir's words were quiet: almost nonexistent, but the driver heard them well enough.

"Are you nervous sir?"

"About the competition, no." The Jedi's words paused briefly. "About this spectacle, I'm about to walk through the middle of, maybe a little uncomfortable." It wasn't his setting of choice. He would much rather face a line of Sith assassins, than the media. There was certainly a reason he made it a habit of entering contests in the Outer Rim, rather than the Core.

The driver thought better than to continue the subject as they made the final turn. Immediately, the bright lights that would put each person walking the red carpet on display came into view, followed by the occasional flashes of the holorecorders. Stopping the speeder, the driver turned and nodded to Mir, "Good luck, with them."

Mir broke a small grin, as he returned the nod. "Thank you. I'll call when I need picked up after the competition." With that, he opened the door and stepped out into the brilliant lights. Oh the lights. Looking around, he surveyed the scene before him. He noticed a few fighters he had seen before, but no one he was particularly friendly with. He did however see one of his fellow Jedi, though Kaz seemed to be surrounded by more of the media attention than anyone else, so he decided to stay at arms length. At least for the time being. Why couldn't the fights just begin already?

Kura breathed deeply for a few seconds after Kaz exited the limo, pushing down feelings of mutiny even as the sounds of the crowd filtered inside. Unaccustomed as she was to formal events such as this, she was even less accustomed to the dress into which Kaz had insisted on her wearing. She had spent what had seemed like days being primped and preened, prodded and poked, and had ended up with someone she barely recognised staring back at her from the mirror.

Kaz's reaction to her appearance had done nothing to appease her, and Kura felt self-conscious, and, despite the alterations that Kaz had ordered to the dress to ensure that she would be able to fight without hindrance, if necessary, she felt restricted, and uncomfortable, and as though she was inhabiting somebody else's skin. And now she had to face the crowds outside that were seemingly yelling all the louder for Kaz than they had previously done.

He was going to owe her big time for this.

Shooting Kaz a black glare as he reached his hand towards her, she took it, giving it a sharp squeeze before bracing herself, and using her partner's assistance to leave the limo. A slightly satisfied smile graced her lips as her bare feet - the only point of mutiny against being tarted up that had actually stuck - hit the ground, and Kura pulled herself up to her full height, blinking in surprise at the crowds that were lining the entrance to the charity event, before bringing herself close to Kaz's ear.

"You did not warn me of this," she hissed, feeling that she was being taken for a ride. "It is bad enough to have to wear this... monstrosity, but to not be warned of the implications of the event... you owe me for this, Kaziki Halcyon." However, she had promised him that she would play nice for him, so schooled her features into a small half-smile, on the face of it looking completely unruffled.

And to think that the years of Jedi training were to be wasted on this.

Kaz gave Kura a reproving look. "Did I say that there would be hundreds of screaming people, scores of reporters, dozens of competitors, and a few celebrities to make it all worse? No, but I did mention this was a big event with lots of people in attendance. I may not have beat the subject to death but nor did I state it in a way to cause you to underestimate the matter either." He smiled warmly and shook his head. "Besides, what do you have against large numbers of people? The worse that can come from this is idle speculation and Jedi get that all of the time anyway, as do nobles."

Kaz kept her hand in his as he began up the carpet, reaching out into the Force to take stock of the crowd as he went. Empty adulation from the fans, baseless and unreasoned for the most part. Cold indifference or hot ambition from the reporters and photographers, depending on whether they were there to make their career or simply ride out its remainder. There was a fair amount of hope floating around in various flavors, people wishing for autographs, eye contact, or even just to get close enough to their favorite athlete or famous person to actually see what they looked like off a holovid.

The charity, this year around, was a children's hospital that had long existed in the Corellian Sector but that had seen its services strained to the breaking point by the influx of war orphans and refugees that had been left over after the eventual defeat of the One Sith at Coruscant and through the Core Region. It was a good enough cause and would make all the rich, generally uncaring types feel the promised warm fuzzies of good PR. Kaz, on the other hand, wasn't just going to look sad as he went by so the properly positioned camera operators could get their shots. Nope, Kaz was gonna say hi... and thus so was Kura.

"See that little roped off section up there, along the right hand side of the red carpet. Those are some of the children I told you this was all about. The more photogenic ones, at least. I have a stop scheduled before we leave tomorrow if you want to see the facility, but I think it might be nice to stop by and say hi now. I'm sure you won't want to miss this." Several of the children were in wheel chairs, two were able to stand under their own power but definitely looked less than healthy. And one little girl stood at the end of the line clutching her caretaker's leg and barely peeking around the white slacks the woman wore.

Kaz headed straight for the row, ignoring several people along the way and upsetting the processional order that somebody had managed to organize on the red carpet. "Children!" Kaz called the word out cheerfully and his practically insidious Force presence slithered out to catch at each of the young beings, infecting them with the same positive presence he was displaying for one and all. Fears melted away, the feeling of doom that often lingers around the chronically or terminally ill lifted, and many who had appeared foggy on medication started to come into focus visibly.

The little girl at the end got an extra dose of courage and her head inched outward to see what the smiling man in green and black wanted. Kaz was shaking hands, making credit coins appear out of ears as if by magic, and handing caretakers their watches back in short order, all to the delight of the children. A flower, a real one hidden within his sleeve, appeared in his hand when he got to the end of the line where he dropped to one knee and held it out as if beseeching a princess for her favor in some classical play. "M'lady, wouldst thou favor me with thine smile. A smile is a curve that sets everything straight."

Slowly making his way down the red carpet, Mir exchanged quiet nods with a number of fans, and staffers alike. So far, he had managed to avoid direct media attention. Just up ahead, another contestant was being interviewed. The Jedi recognized the Lorrdian as Garin, a former undefeated prize fighter, and current Undisputed Champion Shockboxer. They had met before in the ring, and each occasion was a war all in itself. As he started past what he considered to be his greatest competition, he heard the man's words, "With Torin Anu's decision to withdraw from the competition, I see no real challenge here. Your Champion will prove his worth, by destroying the competition."

The very words were a challenge to all that Mir was. He was a trained Jedi: a Teras Kasi master: a man who had dedicated his very life to perfecting physical battle, in all its forms. He was an Epicanthix. More so, he was a Pike: a family as storied in the arena as any other. Greater than any of those factors though, was his pride and his confidence. He knew his Masters would likely be unhappy with his choice, but he couldn't stop himself.

Turning towards the interview, he leaned into view of the holorecorder, "Garin, you might not want to let your words get so far ahead of you. The last time you stepped into my arena, you were left upon the ground, with my shadow hanging over you. I don't believe you will fare any better on this night." Mir let his words end, and was content to simply continue on his way down the carpet. As soon as he tried to take a step though, another reporter was in his face. He had opened himself to the onslaught. Behind him, he could faintly hear Garin's rebuttal and acceptance of the challenge he had just issued.

"Sir, can we get your name?"

The Jedi debated waving off the reporter, but he knew that would only draw more attention. "Mir Pike."

"Any relation to the Teras Kasi Masters, Dux, Za, and Zan?"

This man seemed to know his history. Maybe he deserved an interview. "They were my family members. Yes."

The reporter seemed to be getting frustrated, as if he were looking for more of a notable sound bite. "Just now, you essentially issued a challenge to the Undisputed Champion. You however are not a member of the Circuit. Why is it that you believe you can take down the Champ?"

"I've faced Garin before. He is a tremendous fighter, but I know his style. I know his tactics. When I defeated him before, it was in an arena with no rules, and he attempted to use that fact to his advantage. Here, he is much more limited in what he can attempt to do. I look forward to standing in the ring with him again." With that, Mir stopped talking, and immediately made his way around the reporter. With a little work, he was able to avoid another trio of holocams.

He came to a stop near a roped off area, where Kaz was greeting children, and eliciting smiles with slight of hand tricks. The young man certainly had a way about him.

"It was a lie of omission, as you are well aware," reproached Kura gently, but with a slight smile on her lips. She would forgive him the lie, as well he knew, and in no small part due to the fact that she couldn't get out of the situation now without causing a scene. "I repeat... you will owe me for this." Despite the familiarity and relative feeling of safety she experienced, being one of a large crowd, Kura felt more than a little out of her comfort zone. Restricted, primped to within an inch of her life, unable to arm herself as she would have liked, she felt at a distinct disadvantage.

Allowing her hand to rest in Kaz's grasp - all the better to keep up the charade that she was there as his "date" rather than a bodyguard - Kura trailed him up the red carpet, allowing him to work the crowds, while she remained typically aloof. Like her partner, Kura placed her trust in the Force, feeling the emotions of the massed crowds, hysteria of one sort or another being the prevailing sensation coming from them. Desperation, excitement and a hint of disappointment mingled in to make a heady cocktail of emotions swirling around the crowd.

There were more than a handful of Force sensitives present, too. Kura made a mental note to watch out for them.

Her gaze followed Kaz's pointing finger towards a group of children, and, immediately, Kura's heart went out to them, most of her misgivings forgotten. she smiled genuinely as Kaz led her towards the small group. "I would be honoured to accompany you tomorrow," she said, laughing as he started to play to his captive audience. There was a small Togruta boy in a wheelchair, tucked away behind the rest, almost as though he was an afterthought. Kura cast a quick glance towards the nurse who was accompanying him, who gave her the slightest of nods, Bending as best she could in the restrictive dress, Kura smiled at the boy, displaying her sharp, pointy teeth, before reaching out and picking him up, swinging him in the air, making him giggle with delight.

Hefting him onto her hip, Kura turned to Kaz. "Thank you," she said simply, lightly tickling the boy to make him squeal with laughter again. It was at moments like this that she missed her sisters.

"I haven't told you my boot size either, does that count against me as well?" Kaz smiled into her reproachful statement, "Though who am I to pretend myself debt free in this galaxy? I've built myself more than a few things on credit so why not. Let me know when I can pay up." Kaz was too clever by half, it had to be a trap of some sort, but who was to call him on such a thing? His smile didn't twitch even the slightest as he managed to turn yet another credit coin trick without looking, leaving the cred in the child's hands before moving to the next. Kura got a bit over excited about one of her own but he could understand the tendency. A Jedi was supposed to be selfless but more good could be done if a Jedi chose challenges they could complete...

"You're welcome, they're the only reason I showed up. I've been invited plenty of times but once I got to the point where they wouldn't be able to beat me it would have been pure ego to continue fighting, even on the amateur ranks. If my presence can create money for these children to live better and longer lives... well that's a worthy battle." Kaz gave her a conspiratorial look as he stood by watching her hold the child of her species. "Do you sense him? Another trained like us, strong but disciplined." Likely another Jedi, as the Sith either didn't show up at all or burned like a supernova. The only thing that kept Kaz from declaring the other a Jedi for sure was the stench of smug that followed the presence.

As his fellow Jedi continued with the children, Mir began to ever so slowly move towards the conclusion of the carpet. The glitz and glamor was far from his comfort, and it certainly was not the type of distraction he needed before competition. He needed to focus: focus was the only route to victory. After brushing past a few more members of the media, he came to sizable area set with solid backdrops, marked with sponsor logos. There, a dozen or so beautiful young women stood prepared to have their photos taken with any and all comers.

The Jedi started to pass on by, when he noticed a rather beautiful young woman. She was tall: nearly his height, and there was something about her that drew his eyes more so than the others. Without intentionally doing so, he found himself moving her direction. In the past he had been the type to enjoy the company of a lovely lady on occasion, but those were normally celebratory occasions, or after parties where he was essentially required to attend. A woman, a ring girl no less, drawing his attention before a match was quite odd. Finding himself at arms reach, Mir almost froze. His mouth seemingly opened itself, as his voice climbed out, "Hello there."

His mind raced. What was he doing? He didn't know this girl. Even more likely, he would never see her again. All he was doing was breaking his concentration, and putting himself in position to be beaten. No. He was risking beating himself by allowing his mind to wonder. His mind simply did not care. It was enjoying where it was, and so was the rest of him.

Kura arched an eyebrow up at Kaz, giving his hand another tight little squeeze. "Your boot size is unimportant to me," she replied quietly, the polite expression still on her face as she allowed herself to be led up the red carpet. "Besides, I could check your boot size any time I wish." She shot him a small smile. He knew, as well as she did, that he was already forgiven, but it wouldn't hurt to keep him as off balance, on occasion, as he was capable of keeping her. After all, payback for how he had kept her unbalanced enough to get her into the dress was only fair.

Narrowing her eyes as Kaz readily agreed that he owed her, Kura regarded him for a second or two as they continued walking towards the children. They were getting closer to one of the Force sensitives in the crowd, a powerful one, too, and she glanced around, trying to pinpoint his or her whereabouts. There were too many people there for her to be sure who it was, though.

The children... well, they made up for the awkwardness of having to walk the red carpet as the "date" of Kaziki Halcyon. The one little boy in particular tugged at her heartstrings, and Kura rested him comfortably on her hip as they chattered away in Togruti to one another for a few moments. Nodding, she smiled warmly at Kaz as he explained his reasons for attendance. "I would not have thought you for a boxer," she replied, a little surprised, although she frowned as he mentioned the other powerful Force user.

"There are many Force sensitives present," she replied quietly, before handing the child back to his nurse, sad to have to see him go back into his wheelchair. She made a mental note to seek him out the following day when they visited the hospital. "However, I agree. There is one in particular who is... trained." While the person in question had the air of a Jedi around him, it was more... raw than most Jedi, and yet distinctly not a Sith. "Do you have any idea who it might be yet?"
