Auren grinned at the sound of Jax smiling. Despite their apparent differences, and the prickliness of their initial communication, it would appear that they were coming to find some common ground, and a mutual respect. And, dare she think it, she actually liked the big Mandalorian. Now there was a turn up for the books.

"So what would your going rate be as a guide," she chuckled, shaking her head. Not that a vacation on Concord Dawn was top of her list to do, but you never knew, she might get there some time. "An' yeah, keepin' out of trouble's appealing. I don't need anyone else on my back, especially if it's for somethin' petty that could otherwise be avoided." Petty little infractions wouldn't be her downfall, not if she could help it. Auren hadn't bounced around the galaxy for fifteen years by unknowingly breaking some rule or other.

So skilled was Jax's piloting, Auren barely noticed him bringing the ship into the landing bay, and she smirked as he manoeuvred it to face out of the asshole, making for a quick escape route if necessary. She shot him an innocent look. "Why, I'll just be taggin' along for the ride," she said, before she broke into a mischievous grin. She was certain that there was more than a little bit to be learned from this little jaunt, more than just some basic information.

And the right kind of information on the Vong would be sure to bring a price somewhere.

Auren took note of the information about the Vong's ships, although it was obviously something that was common enough knowledge amongst the right people, and, as such, wouldn't fetch a price anywhere. It was good information to have while they were inside of the ship, though: after all, if the Vong were that skilled at biological manipulation, who knew what the ships themselves were capable of?

She nodded comfortably. "I've used a full-face rebreather before, so it's nothing new," she confirmed. "Hopefully, if we play fair, they'll play fair." There was a beat of silence. "But that's not likely, right, which is why you want me along?"

Auren grinned at the comment on weaponry. "Gimme the carbine, can never have too many options," she chuckled, checking her own guns were still in place in their various holsters. "After all, never know what you're comin' up against, right?"

"Assuming I don't have any more lucrative work taking me away, I'd do it for a per Diem. Special rate, just for you." It was a sales pitch, he didn't have anything special to show her so it would be more like light escort duty to turn away the con men. "It isn't Nal Hutta, after all, keeping you out of trouble would be easy enough I'd likely wear my helmet on my belt most of the time." Concord Dawn was a well behaved place thanks to the Protectors.

Jax snorted, another burst of static. "As pure as the driven snow."

"I'm not sure how they'll do us. The trick is to be respectful of their situation and to show strength by requiring they respect ours. The Vong have dealt with the Mandalorians before, I doubt they've forgotten how that works." As she requested he handed her a blaster carbine. It was a standard military model currently in use by the Fel Empire's Storm Trooper Legions, nothing particularly special but rugged, dependable, and fairly accurate at the stand off ranges one would expect in most fire fights. "I've got a few crowd control devices on my person, if I say get down you just drop to a knee and keep firing, I'll launch over your head. If I say floor, you go flat and keep firing. Don't be afraid to use me as a moving shield, my armor can take it. Just don't shoot me with that disruptor."

He handed her the personal atmosphere device with the attached full face breather. It was a tad bulky but nothing she couldn't handle having on her belt for one quick meet and greet w/ information exchange. "Keep your eyes open, stay close to me, and sling the carbine until somebody gets out of hand." Jax pulled what appeared to be a handheld light canon out of another locker, racked the charge lever, and slipped it into a set of clamps on the back of his armor where he could grab it just by reaching over his own shoulder. "Lets go be neighborly." Jax led her toward the simple hatch that would put them out in the landing bay.

He checked the panel by the door and it displayed that the atmosphere outside was M-class planet standard. A simple slap of the controls and they were out in the open. Nearby, another sphincter opened and revealed a uncloaked Vong with about twenty of his closest warrior friends. Jax merely nodded toward them and started walking that direction like he hadn't a care in the world.

Auren rolled her eyes. "Special rate, my ass," she chuckled, "You sound like one of those hustlers in the market, the ones who can't sell druk unless they make out that everyone's getting a better rate than the last person, when, in fact, the price is steadily rising." She knew how it worked, and knew it worked very well. The phrase "there's a sucker born every minute" was never more appropriate than in these luckless days.

Inspecting the blaster carbine, Auren familiarised herself with the hardware for a few seconds, nodding as Jax considered their approach with regards to the Vong. "Well, sorry my physical presence doesn't lend you more of a requirement for respect," she grinned. Thing is, it was a galaxy-wide constant that you didn't have to be big and mean to be dangerous, and Auren was living proof of that. "Still, they'll get the message quickly enough if they start to messin' us around."

"Got it," she replied, to Jax's instructions. "I got no desire to get my head blown off today, especially as a result of 'friendly fire'." Taking the rebreather, she attached it to her belt, and slung the carbine over her shoulder: there was no point in attracting trouble in the first place, not if it could be easily avoided. "I get it. Look sweet an' innocent until it's time to shoot the place up. Right." She tossed him a grim grin as the hatch opened, and there were twenty or more of the ugliest bastards she had ever had the misfortune to see.

"Now's not the time to be pulling them up on their beauty regimen, right?"

"They do that to themselves on purpose, as a matter of fact. I'm told it's a dying practice though. Watch for a fella with an arm that looks like it came off a giant eagle, That will be the top dog warrior for this lot, the one that can take a whim and see us pinned up on a wall for fun." Jax kept moving forward, the death head on his helmet leading the way.

In fact, his heavily armored and massive form drew all the attention of the gathered warriors of the Yuuzhan Vong. He was Mandalorian and that was a lesson that had apparently been taught even to these once presumed extra-galactic beings. The Vong had attempted an invasion of Mandalore, back during their war a few generations back, after the Mandalorians had defied the then seemingly unstoppable war machine. Mandalore was still Mandalore. 'Nuff said. A warrior, somewhat shorter than the others but with a presence that commanded attention and difference from his fellows stepped forward.

"You strength is known, Mandalorian. You have honor here, use it well."

"Ours was a good fight, well remembered in the scars of our grandfathers and grandmothers." Jax responded when they were close enough for a conversation. "We have information that your Shapers might find interesting and will give it freely in return for any information they can give us on the origin and nature of the creature that provided it. As I know you can understand, this has been an attack on our reputation by a sneaking enemy that flees into the darkness before the arrival of warriors and must be answered."

"Of course, attacks of cowardice deserve nothing better than for the perpetrators to be hunted down like rodents." The Vong warrior nodded and turned, a white snake-like creature curled around his arm flickering its tongue at Jax and Auren as he walked away. The other warriors parted instantly and allowed the smaller warrior to walk past them unhindered.

Jax glanced at Auren. "Size matters not, apparently. Little ones got more to prove."

Auren twitched an eyebrow up. "Well, gotta say it does nothin' for their overall appeal," she said in a whispered aside. Most likely, that was the plan. The Vong weren't known for their desire to be social, and the more terrifying and hideous they looked, the less that others would wish to be around them, she supposed.

Not that anyone's attention was anywhere other than on Jax, anyway. His massive form dominated the quietly pulsing and slickly organic chamber, and Auren allowed herself the tiniest of smiles. Jax wasn't the kind of man you messed with, at least on first appearance, even though she had given he and Hettir a bit of a runaround when they were trying to hire her.

Playing hard to get worked infinitely better in business than in personal relationships, that was for certain.

Auren kept in close enough to hear the conversation as Jax and the Vong leader addressed one another, her expression fixed and stoic, her stance relaxed and as though she didn't have a care in the world. The best way to be an effective threat when needed was to appear to pose no threat at all. Her stature, and the fact that she was female, often went a long way to doing half the job for her.

Laying it on thick for the Vong, Jax got the intended response, clearly, and Auren grinned quickly as he glanced at her. "You're preachin' to the converted, big man," she chuckled quietly. "Just makes us all the more determined." She cocked her head towards the Vong. "We goin'?"

"Cultural point of view, these ones still worship their old gods after a fashion. In as much, the more they sacrifice the higher standing they have. Think of it like being rich, with enough money any slob can have an attractive companion." Jax walked along, his voice coming through only the com earbud he'd provided her. The Mandalorians had made an extensive intelligence recon on the Vong when they'd first encountered them, knowing why a people did something was an excellent beginning to using that thing against them.

Jax led the way in pursuit of the short warrior, stepping through the sphincter-like airlocks that sat in the halls every so often. Just like the emergency bulkheads on a Star Destroyer. The short Vong warrior never looked back, trusting the two to stay on his six though the white snake creature wrapped around his arm stared at them while flickering its tongue the whole way. At various points along the hike there were other membranes lining both sides of the corridor but nothing else marking the spaces beyond any of them.

At one point a woman walked by. Her face and head appeared, for all intensive purposes, to be that of a human or near human, but every other detail was that of a Yuuzhan Vong from the dress made out of what appeared to be the still living membranes of a bats wings to the tattooed and scarred hands and feet. Jax didn't turn his head but he watched the woman all the way through his HUD as she went by, making the eye movements to have that face added to his facial recognition computer. "It's called an ooglith masker, some sort of creature that adheres to the Vong's face to make them appear to be some one else." Once again, his voice only came through her earpiece.

Finally, the short Vong warrior turned, touching a membrane and stroking it until it opened just like a deflating balloon. Jax looked down at Auren for a moment and then followed the Warrior through. There was nothing else to describe the space beyond. It was some sort of laboratory... except everything was alive save the fire that appeared to be cooking some shelled creature. The Vong turned halfway back to regard them. "This is the facility where the Shapers will review your data... it's equipped to work with the... technology... you no doubt have it recorded on."

Jax's voice buzed in her ear, and Auren nodded, not wanting to give the game away to the Vong that they were being covertly discussed. It was all well and good for the Mandalorian: he could hide behind the anonymity of his helmet, say what he liked, and the Vong would never have a clue. Auren didn't have that luxury. Her face remained impassive as Jax talked, and she was pleased to be able to successfully stifle an amused smile and an accompanying chuckle.

The Vong warrior led the way with the utmost of confidence, and it was clear that he was used to being in charge, for others to follow his lead without question, and that went as far as those who they admitted as guests, it would appear. The ship was almost breathing as they walked through, and Auren could feel the life pulsing through its organic structure. If she wasn't seeing it with her own eyes, she wasn't sure that she would believe it was possible.

Blinking at the almost-human appearance of a woman who walked past, she didn't have to wait long for an explanation from Jax. Again, not wanting to risk saying something that would piss off their hosts, Auren nodded and gave Jax a quick grin.

It didn't take too long before they were led into a grotesque-looking laboratory, and Auren was instantly on her guard. It just didn't feel right in there. A shudder raced down her spine, and she cocked her head as the Vong spoke. "Look, thanks for this," she said, hoping she wasn't overstepping the boundaries. "Whatever this creature is, it's somethin' that, if left unchecked, could be a serious threat, especially if there's more than one of the critters." That really didn't bear thinking about.

Jax nodded at Auren's words of thanks but was busy watching a line of beings in yet more living garb, appearing to be nothing so much as curtains of moss draped about their forms. Many of them, though not all, were females who would have been delicate of form if not for the variety of scars, tattoos, and replacement body parts. One of them, one that had neither of her original arms from the elbow down, walked over to Jax and held out a hand that had only three fingers and suction pads at the tips. Jax pulled the chip out of his belt and placed it in her 'hand'.

The Vong warrior nodded at Auren as well. "Particularly if kept a secret from those who would be able to counter it easily." He was obviously indicating the Yuuzhan Vong with his statement. "We are practiced with the type of warfare that you encountered, the weapon deployed was likely tailor made to do exactly what it did. Effective, no?"

"That's what we suspect, the issue being that the things were either retrieved or dissolved when killed. We didn't even get any physical description of the things, we have nothing but goo to work with. So we came to you and are hoping it's not another of your kind getting back into the domination business or, worse, selling your knowledge to others."

The Vong, if she were honest, freaked Auren out just a little, but it wasn't something that she could afford to put on display, not if she wanted to make sure that her part in this little operation went off without a hitch. It wouldn't do for the hired gun to look as though she was being unnerved by the situation.

Her eyes tracked a tattooed Vong woman, a woman who might have been attractive were it not for the various additions and alterations to her body. There was only so far you could modify a body before it lost its aesthetic appeal, at least as far as Auren was concerned. She listened as the Vong and Jax discussed the situation, her eyes raking over the laboratory. Everything pulsed and seethed with life, and she could almost imagine the floor moving minutely underneath her feet.

It probably was.

"Whatever this thing was, it made a big ol' mess," added Auren. from the video I saw, it doesn't leave much of its victims behind for identification, an' was capable of disappearing without a trace." She glanced at Jax, her eyebrows raised. "Was there any way for it to get off the colony, or d'you think it went off into the jungle to hide," she asked.

The Shaper took the chip with a tut of disapproval, turning back and moving back into the now mulling throng of her fellows.

The shortest warrior watched her go, his nostrils flared, before turning back to look at Jax. "So, the little one you bring with you... what is she?"

Jax raised a brow ridge, though that didn't show through his helmet obviously. He made a show of turning his head to glance at Auren before looking back at the Vong warrior. "Apprentice warrior, hasn't earned her armor yet. Doesn't matter how they develop the knack for it, we take 'em how we find 'em. And when."

"We still can't figure out how your kind gave us so much trouble with a philosophy so devoid of... standards."

"The standards aren't in the philosophy. Doesn't mean they don't exist."
